A2 Safe Transport Relaunches to Combat Record-High Pedestrian Injuries; Demands $3 Million in Immediate Safety Infrastructure

ANN ARBOR, MI — In response to a 22 percent surge in pedestrian-vehicle injury crashes and a decade-high rate of fatal and serious injury crashes, community members are relaunching A2 Safe Transport. The grassroots advocacy group, which successfully improved school zone safety ten years ago, is mobilizing once again to demand that City Council prioritize low-cost, high-impact safety improvements in the upcoming budget cycle.

A Growing Crisis on Ann Arbor Streets

According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department’s 2025 annual report, emergency runs for pedestrian/vehicle injuries have spiked significantly. This data mirrors a grim three-year trend of fatal and serious injury crashes stuck at a 10-year high across the city.

Due to these alarming statistics, A2 Safe Transport argues that the City Council has failed to address the root of the problem. While millions have been allocated for large-scale, grant-funded and/or capital projects (CIP), neighborhood-level hazards remain neglected.

“We are seeing a disconnect between high-dollar innovation projects and the daily reality of our neighborhoods,” says a spokesperson for A2 Safe Transport. “Locations like the intersection of Green and Glacier Way—the site of at least two critical pedestrian injuries since 2023—continue to be ignored despite a 25-year history of resident requests.” See Crashes in Ann Arbor for an excellent crash analysis and recommendations.

A Proven Model for Change

A2 Safe Transport was originally formed in 2016 following the tragic death of a student in an unlit school crosswalk. By organizing parents, students, and safety guards, the group produced a professional report of necessary improvements that forced the city to invest millions into school walk zones.

A decade later, the group is repeating this proven process to address the current city-wide crisis. A2 Safe Transport is requesting a $3 million line-item allocation for this budget cycle, specifically targeting “small but critical” improvements at high risk and/or documented crash sites. Within 60 days, A2 Safe Transport will submit a report detailing these needs, most of which residents have already identified via email and the A2 Fix It platform.
